Kyomei — an izakaya hidden in a courtyard.

The entrance is our own design: we used a rhythmic-metric system and worked to fit it into the building’s existing façade as naturally as possible.

Inside is a minimalist interior with elements of an izakaya: natural materials, a minimum of decoration, work with light and shadow. The light always comes from behind a plane — behind battens, behind plaster, out of a niche; direct sources are almost absent. Windows cut into the clean plaster open onto the old masonry and light it from below.

We wanted to create an enveloping, intimate atmosphere in this space — slightly mysterious, slightly mystical.
